Prosperous Thailand Auto Industry Drives Great Demand for Auto Parts

Auto industry is one of the pillars in Thailand, which contribute 10% to Thai economy.

Thailand’s total export value reached 228.83 billion dollars in 2011, of which, autos, parts and accessories topped the second largest export item with a export value of 16.98 billion dollars, only next to computers, parts and accessories (export value: 17.06 billion dollars). Thailand’s total import value came to 228.49 billion dollars in 2011. In the top ten import items, autos, parts and accessories was the least import product with import value of 6.5 billion dollars. It was easy to find Thailand enjoyed a total trade surplus of 334.37 million dollars in 2011 and a trade surplus for auto parts of 10.48 billion dollars.

The total output of Thailand’s car was 1,267,555 units in the first seven months of 2012, seeing an increase of 32% year-on-year (Jan – Jul’ 11: 957,843 units). Among of that, pickups took up 56% of the total’s, 35% was passenger cars, 7% was PPV, and 2% was others.

In the first seven month of 2012, Thailand’s domestic sales for cars grew by 46% to 738,169 units (Jan – Jul’ 11: 504,914 units), of which, pickups, passenger cars, PPV, trucks and other CV respectively account for 44%, 44%, 5%, 3% and 4%.

In the first seven month of 2012, Thailand’s export sales for cars increased by 36% to 390.53 million Bht and in the export volume of 646,544 units (Jan – Jul’ 11: 476.708 units). Pickups were the largest export vehicles, taking up 68% of the total, the others were car passengers (24%) and PPV (8%). In terms of export market, Asia was Thailand’s largest export market, taking up 32%, followed by Middle East (26%), Oceania (20%), Central & South America (11%), Europe (7%), and Africa (4%). 

 

In future, environmental friendly vehicle will become automotive trend in Thailand. With the climate change in global, human environmental awareness goes stronger and stronger, and people expect vehicles could be environmental friendly in future, conforming to SULEV/EU6, reducing the emission of CO2, and being recyclable. In regard to safety, vehicles should be equipped with crash safety and pedestrian protection. In terms of fuels, people emphasis on the diversity of energy. The fuels shall cover a wide range of petroleum (conventional & alternative sources), bio fuels (Ethanol E85, Bio-diesel), electricity (conventional & alternative sources), and hydrogen. Size and weight reduction are crucial to energy conservation and lower CO2 emissions.

Lifestyle and climate change are the two factors that drive vehicle’s trend. With the change of lifestyle, people prefer to smaller car, 3G (Intelligent Transportation System) and low price product. And with the change of climate, people’s environmental awareness goes stronger and stronger, and prefer to environmental friendly products like Eco car, CNG, Hybrid, and Electric vehicle.  

Some insiders point out that Thailand’s automotive industry keeps going strong and will stimulate a great demand for auto parts.
