African Free Trade Zone Agreement took effect on May 30th, 2019. If all members of African Union signed the Agreement, African Free Trade Zone will become the biggest free trade zone in the world. It is estimated that the GDP is worth US$ 2.5 trillion with a population of 1.2 billion.
Mr. Stephen Kalingi, expert of UN African Economic Committee, stated that the establishment of African Free Trade Zone would bring more opportunities to the cooperation between China and Africa.
However, Mr. Kalingi also stated that due to the poor infrastructure and unbalanced development, it might take some time to release the power of the Zone. Africa still need China and other countries’ support to the integration process. The Belt and Road is in line with Africa’s development vision, and Africa expects China to continue to invest in Africa’s infrastructure field.
