Advanced Cable Ties Inc. is a leading manufacturer of cable ties and accessories. Ken Tomasetti and his wife, Donna, founded the company in 1992, first setting up operations in Fitchburg and later moving to Gardner in its industrial park at 245 Suffolk Lane. The company, a 24-7 operation, is nearing completion of a major expansion to nearly double the size of its facility and workforce. ACT generates $25 million to $30 million in yearly sales, which are expected to increase to $55 million to 60 million annually in five years. Mr. Tomasetti holds an engineering degree in plastics from Lowell Technical Institute, which is now part of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
What is your biggest-selling cable tie?
The 7-inch tie is the biggest seller. We sell 400 million a year. Our sizes range from 7 inches to 48. The 48-inch tie is made for the air conditioning industry. We sell about 36 million of those a year. Somebody in the air conditioning industry once asked me why we didn’t make a 48-inch tie, so we did. Before we manufactured that length, they were using duct tape and metal wiring.
Do you test your cable ties to make sure they are strong, dependable and easy to use?
We have a Quality Control Department that performs three tests to determine flexibility, ease of insertion and overall strength. We strive for the highest tensile strength with the lowest insertion force. Underwriters Laboratories sets the standard strength for the industry and we’re often twice that strength, so it’s a dependable tie.
