Global manufacturing expands in September with slower pace: report

Growth in the global manufacturing sector slowed for four straight months in September as the resurgence of COVID-19 and rising raw material prices weighed on the recovery, according to an industry report.The global manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) dropped by 0.1 percentage points month on month to 55.6 in September, a report published by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) showed.A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below 50 reflects contraction.The resurgence of COVID-19 continues to post challenges to the recovery of global market demand, and rising raw material prices have pushed up economic operation costs for countries worldwide, said the CFLP.The PMI for China's manufacturing sector came in at 49.6 in September, edging down from 50.1 in August, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed. China's home appliance sector posted steady growth in the first eight months of the year, with exports and the output of major products increasing, official data shows.The output of refrigerators rose 6.7 percent year on year to 59.14 million units during the period, and the output of washing machines hit 55.92 million units, surging 22.6 percent year on year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).A total of 152.2 million air conditioners were produced in the January-August period, up 15.6 percent year on year, NDRC data shows.In the first eight months, China exported over 2.5 billion home appliance units. Land-sea freight transport from China's Chongqing surges in Jan.-Sept.

Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has witnessed 1,493 rail-sea freight trips in the first three quarters of 2021, up 77 percent year on year, surpassing the 1,297 trips made in all of 2020, according to the New Land-Sea Corridor Operation Co., Ltd.A total of 75,000 standard containers worth 9.8 billion yuan (about 1.5 billion U.S. dollars) were transported during the period."In the first three quarters of this year, the number of trips shipped by major stations in Chongqing increased by more than 40 percent. The New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor has reduced transportation costs and improved transportation efficiency for local enterprises," said Jia Jun, deputy director of the operation department of the company.The New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor is a trade and logistics passage jointly built by Singapore and provincial-level regions of western China. China opens new port on Yangtze River

A 10,000-metric-tonne port, first of its kind in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River -- China's longest waterway-- began operations Wednesday.Located in Zhongxian County, Chongqing Municipality, the port has 14 berths with an annual throughput of 25 million tonnes.The upper reaches of the Yangtze River cover Chongqing and the provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan. It is an important area along the Belt and Road, as well as the Yangtze River Economic Belt."As the first 10,000-metric-tonne port in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, it will provide a more convenient channel for goods from eastern Sichuan, southern Gansu and Shaanxi, and parts of Chongqing to reach the waterway and the sea," said Wang Botao, director of the municipal port and maritime affairs center.Jiang Xia, Party chief of Zhongxian County, said that a logistics park near the port is under construction. The park will rely on the advantages of port logistics to develop warehousing, green building materials, cold chain logistics and electronic information industries. 

China's trade surplus tops 291 bln yuan in August

China's international goods and services trade surplus stood at 291.6 billion yuan (about 45 billion U.S. dollars) in August, official data showed.The country's trade income amounted to approximately 2 trillion yuan, and expenditure stood at around 1.71 trillion yuan, according to data released by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.China's goods trade income came in at 1.82 trillion yuan with an expenditure of 1.46 trillion yuan, leading to a surplus of 363.2 billion yuan, the data showed.The services trade saw a deficit of 71.7 billion yuan, with the sector's income and expenditure standing at 178 billion yuan and 249.6 billion yuan, respectively. Profits of China's major industrial firms maintained steady growth momentum in the first eight months of the year as industrial production continued to firm up and business operations kept improving, official data showed on Tuesday.Industrial firms with annual business revenues of at least 20 million yuan (about 3.1 million U.S. dollars) saw their combined profits surging 49.5 percent year on year in the Jan.-Aug. period to 5.6 trillion yuan, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.The volume jumped 42.9 percent compared with the 2019 level, putting the average Jan.-Aug. growth for 2020 and 2021 at 19.5 percent.In August alone, major industrial companies raked in profits of 680.28 billion yuan, up 10.1 percent year on year, NBS data showed.Business operations of China's industrial firms continued to improve last month, despite the impact of floods, a relatively high base and a sporadic resurgence of COVID-19 cases, said NBS senior statistician Zhu Hong.Profits of the high-tech manufacturing sector posted a robust increase of 17.5 percent in August, up 7.4 percentage points from the average level of industrial firms, Zhu added.In particular, the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector saw its profit soar 70.5 percent year on year, driven by strong demand for COVID-19 vaccines.The mining and raw materials manufacturing sector continued rapid profit growth, said Zhu.Boosted by high prices of bulk commodities, the coal industry saw its profit increase by 241 percent, up 30 percentage points from a month ago.
