In the first six months of 2026, China’s fastener sector has been buffeted by fresh overseas trade actions, volatile raw material costs and a wave of companies fast-tracking “capacity offshoring”. This review groups the key developments by theme, offering a concentrated look at the events that are redefining the industry.

1. Trade friction continues to escalate – market access barriers grow higher

Event 1 – Ukraine issues affirmative final anti‑circumvention ruling on Chinese steel fasteners

On 29 January, the Interdepartmental Commission on International Trade of Ukraine announced an affirmative final determination in its anti‑circumvention investigation concerning steel fasteners originating in China. It found that the subject products had been trans‑shipped through Malaysia to evade existing anti‑dumping duties and decided to impose a 67.40 % anti‑dumping duty on the Malaysian shipments. The ruling effectively seals off the third‑country trans‑shipment route for circumventing trade remedies.

Event 2 – South Africa launches second safeguard sunset review on steel threaded fasteners

On 27 February, South Africa’s International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC), acting on an application by the industry body SAFMA, initiated the second sunset review of safeguard measures on imports of steel threaded fasteners. South Africa has already maintained safeguard duties on the same products for three years. Should the review result in an extension, the trade barrier will be prolonged further.

2. Full speed ahead – from “product exports” to “offshore manufacturing”

Event 3 – Tengda Technology pursues a dual‑track layout in Vietnam and Thailand, accelerating its globalisation strategy

Tengda Technology made a series of overseas moves in the first half of 2026. The company plans to invest RMB 167 million to build a production base for 18,000 tonnes per year of stainless‑steel fasteners in the Long Jiang Industrial Park in Vietnam. The facility will mainly manufacture ANSI/ASME‑standard M4–M24 fasteners, and is designed to capitalise on Vietnam’s investment incentives and tax‑treaty advantages while better serving global markets, particularly the Americas.

Event 4 – STL’s Thai subsidiary officially starts operation

In May 2026, Guangdong STL Fastening System Co., Ltd. achieved a major milestone in its overseas strategy: its wholly‑owned Thai subsidiary, TOP FASTENER INDUSTRY CO., LTD., commenced commercial operations. The move represents a solid step in the global production layout of a fastener leader with a strong foothold in high‑end sectors such as aviation, wind power and high‑speed rail, lifting its service capability and delivery resilience worldwide.
Tengda’s dual‑track expansion is far from an isolated case. Mingtai Co., Ltd. has established operations in Uzbekistan, and a number of other leading enterprises are following suit with overseas plants. “Capacity offshoring” has become a consensus strategic choice for the industry as a whole, reflecting a transformation from exporting products to operating as multinational manufacturers.

3. Smart manufacturing deepens – from “concept” to “production line”

Event 5 – Qinchuan Group’s fully automated production line for high‑strength wind‑power fasteners passes final acceptance

On 27 January, the fully automated production line for high‑strength wind‑power bolts, undertaken by the Intelligent Machine Tool Innovation Centre of Qinchuan Group, successfully passed final acceptance. The line not only set a precedent in the industry for the fully automated machining of such high‑strength bolts, but also earned a perfect score from the customer for its outstanding performance.

Event 6 – China’s first intelligent production line for large‑diameter, high‑strength bolts commissioned in Chengdu

On 7 April, the second‑phase project of China Railway High‑Tech Intelligent Equipment, located in the Xinjin Economic Development Zone of Chengdu, commissioned the nation’s first intelligent production line for large‑diameter, high‑strength bolts. The line comprises a hot‑forging line and a cold‑heading line and integrates industrial‑internet technology, high‑precision automated equipment and intelligent logistics and conveying systems to create a fully intelligent, end‑to‑end process. At full capacity it can produce 24,000 tonnes per year, covering strength grades from 8.8 to 12.9, with wide application in bridges, rail transit and other major national projects.

4. Industry‑education integration breaks new ground – tackling the talent shortage

Event 7Fastener Industry‑Education Alliance officially established

On 10 April, the Fastener Industry‑Education Alliance was formally inaugurated at Jiangxi Phoenix Technician College. Huang Weidong, Principal of Cunjin Vocational School (the Alliance’s chair unit), Yang Junfeng, Chairman of CFM (vice‑chair unit), and Shuai Jianghua, representing Jiangxi Phoenix Technician College (vice‑chair unit), delivered speeches highlighting that the Alliance will precisely match industry needs with talent cultivation and accelerate the deep integration of the talent chain, innovation chain and industrial chain.

Event 8 – Annual HR symposium for the fastener sector held

On 25 June 2026, alongside the 16th Fastener Expo Shanghai, the industry’s technical‑talent index release and HR symposium, hosted by CFM, took place. The event focused on persistent pain points such as labour shortages, low job‑matching rates and sluggish talent‑pipeline development. During the symposium, the 2025‑2026 Fastener Industry Salary and Recruitment Report was released. Drawing on databases and field research, the report provides SMEs with quantitative benchmarks for setting pay and attracting talent.
CFM also shared strategies for precisely recruiting high‑end technical professionals, emphasising the need to build employer appeal around three pillars – career development, R&D platforms and cultural identity – thereby offering systematic references for industry‑wide talent upgrading.

5. A safety accident sounds the alarm – quality is the industry’s lifeline

Event 9 – Investigation results of the “8·22” major collapse on the Xining‑Chengdu Railway made public

On 8 April, the Ministry of Emergency Management released the investigation report on the 22 August 2025 collapse of the Jianzha Yellow River mega‑bridge, a worksite on the Xining‑Chengdu Railway. The accident caused 13 deaths and left three people unaccounted for, with direct economic losses of RMB 48.86 million. The investigation concluded that the collapse was caused by the contractor’s unauthorised use of inferior bolts, substandard fabrication and installation of distribution beams, and perfunctory quality inspections, all of which led to the failure of the cable-stayed buckling and suspension system.

6. From exhibition to industry ecosystem – fasteners enter “Shanghai time”

Event 10 – 2026 Fastener Expo Shanghai opens with multiple co‑located events

June saw Shanghai host a “fastener industry week”. Centred on the 16th Fastener Expo Shanghai, a dense calendar of themed events formed a full‑chain gathering covering exhibition, conferences, networking and procurement:

  • 16th Fastener Expo Shanghai (24–26 June): held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), bringing together more than 1,400 quality enterprises from around the world and spanning an exhibition area of over 70,000 square metres, covering finished fasteners, machinery, tooling, materials, testing and packaging.

  •

7. The double squeeze of raw materials and carbon tariffs

Event 11 – Raw material prices hover at low levels while CBAM carbon tariffs take effect, intensifying cost pressure

In the first half of 2026, industrial wire‑rod prices in Zhejiang province fluctuated around a central range of 3,280–3,450 yuan per tonne, sliding continuously from January to March to reach the year’s low point, then staging a modest rebound from April to May that lacked momentum. Social inventories hit a four‑year high.
At the same time, the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) entered its substantive levy phase in 2026, simultaneously raising the overall cost and the compliance threshold for fasteners exported to Europe.

Looking back at the first half of 2026, the fastener industry stands at a critical inflection point. The trade landscape is shifting, production methods are being transformed, the logic of competition is changing, cost structures are being redrawn, and the talent ecosystem is evolving. In this period of upheaval, companies that move first to complete their technological upgrades, globalise their manufacturing footprint and embrace the green transition will seize the initiative in the coming wave of industry consolidation.
